The encounter is an essential condition in the transformation of a trivial thing into a work of art. The exhibition titled “Changing the Place of Encounter” is an encounter in new place (Berlin, InteriorDAsein gallery) based on past exhibition in another place (Halle an der Saale, Kunstverein “Talstrasse” e.V.) with addition of art works:  change of the place of meeting, therefore the possibility of different exhibition and the new encounter. The new exhibition explores the influence of change of physical and non physical space on the new encounter and the relation with art-work.

Changing the Place of Encounter is curated and coordinated by Seda Shekoyan, co-curated by Archi Galentz.

The event is a result of cooperation between InteriorDAsein/Berlin and Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art (ACCEA, Yerevan,  Armenia). Some of exhibited works are part of ACCEA’s vault.

The exhibition takes place under the patronage of the Embassy of Republic of Armenia in Germany, of Ministery of Culture of Republic of Armenia andEuropean Cultural Foundation.

The exhibition is also intended as a guide and little story of actual artistic practices in Armenia through a selection of photos, videos, graphics and painting, most of which will be exhibited in Berlin for the first time.

Exhibited art-works and fragments are created by 13 Armenian contemporary artists from 3 generation. The first generation, which is presented in this exhibition by works of Arevik Arevshatyan, Ruben Grigoryan, Narine Zolyan and Sonia Balassanian came to the area of contemporary Armenian art mostly in 80s, besides the Sonia Balassanian who joined to Armenian context in the beginning of 90s from Armenian diaspora in New York. The 2nd generation is presented by works of David Kareyan, Diana Hakobyan, Mher Azatyan, who came to the area in the beginning of 90s. And finally the 3rd young generation of Armenian artists, who engaged in art processes in last decade. Among them are Tigran Khachatryan, Gagik Ghazareh, Mika Vatinyan, Ovsanna Shekoyan, David Nubaryan and Hovhannes Ishkhanyan. Last three are active just in recent 3-4 years.

Some of these artists (Sonia Ballasanian, David Kareyan, Diana Hakobyan, Mher Azatyan and Tigran Khachatryan) have been exhibited their works in the Armenian pavilion of the Venice Biennale in previous years. Collected photographs and texts of Mher Azatyan, which  are minimal statements, striving to capture the quintessence of everyday speech, were exhibited in the Armenian pavilion of the Venice Biennale 2011.

What works of these artists are speaking about is mostly identity, relation and strain between universal and subject, individuality and body, definition of contemporary art itself, border between art and reality, post-Soviet social, political and cultural conditions,  image-dialog between interior and exterior, public and private, transformations, possibilities and self-criticism of an image.

The exhibition will explore the encounters and the ways in which the interface between the viewer and the artwork, the subject and the object, the art discourse and culture, is defined. The concepts of ''encounter'' and the ''art-work as a subject of art'' independently and in relation are at the heart of this exhibition and discussions incited by it.
